Modern In-Law Suite Designed for Comfort & Flexibility
When designing this modern in-law suite in the Weston project, our focus was on creating a space that feels independent, elevated, and completely livable. Whether used by extended family, guests, or even as a future rental, this upstairs ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) offers a thoughtful balance of comfort and flexibility- all wrapped in a fresh, modern aesthetic.
At Amy Bishop Design, we approach these types of spaces with the same intention and detail as the main home. The result? A bright, beautifully finished suite that adds functionality and long-term value.
Design Vision
The goal was to create a multifunctional living space that could evolve over time without feeling like a secondary part of the home. This in-law suite was imagined as an independent residence, carefully curated with the same level of design intention as the main home.
We wanted it to feel welcoming and complete, with smart amenities, intuitive zones, and high-end finishes. The design balances calm minimalism with warmth, ensuring that every element serves a purpose whether it’s to add function, beauty, or both. The palette, layout, and styling all work together to support flexible living without compromising on comfort or sophistication.
Design Highlights
1. Soaring Ceilings & Natural Light
The vaulted ceiling draws the eye upward and gives the space a grand, open feel. Natural light pours in from multiple windows and skylights, making the entire suite feel calm, fresh, and inviting.
2. Clean, Modern Lines
Crisp shiplap walls and a contemporary light fixture lend subtle architectural detail without overwhelming the space. The design remains cohesive, clean, and effortlessly livable.
3. Soft Neutrals with Layered Textures
A light, serene palette of whites, pale greys, and soft blues sets the tone. Boucle pillows, a wool rug, and woven accents add visual interest and a welcoming, tactile quality.
4. Purposeful Zones for Living
The open floor plan features a cozy lounge, a round dining nook, and a sleek built-in wet bar. Each space intentionally arranged for comfort, conversation, and easy flow.
5. Built-In Wet Bar
This stylish nook is equipped with a sink, wine fridge, and custom cabinetry- perfect for morning coffee, an evening cocktail, or convenient snacks without ever leaving the suite.
6. Custom Phillip Jeffries Wallpaper
The tailored wallpaper selection from Phillip Jeffries adds a refined layer of texture and sophistication, enhancing the already stunning architecture and giving the space a bespoke, finished feel.
7. Statement Decor
Abstract art by Boston-based artist Sharin Schober, sculptural branches, and a cozy plaid throw bring personality and softness to the suite- proof that minimal styling can still make a bold impact when every piece is curated with intention.
