Designing a Playroom That Keeps Kids Engaged, Energized, and Moving

When the weather outside keeps kids indoors, a well-designed playroom offers the perfect solution. Whether it’s raining, snowing, or simply a day for staying in, a thoughtfully designed active play space helps children burn energy, explore, and stay healthy- no matter the season.

At Amy Bishop Design, we believe that great design goes beyond aesthetics. It enhances how a home functions and feels for its residents, including the youngest members of the family. A playroom that encourages physical activity can support kids' growth and well-being, all while fitting seamlessly into the home's overall design.

Designing a Rainy-Day Playroom: Must-Have Elements

To encourage movement indoors, here are several key features we recommend when designing an active playroom:

1. Climbing Structures: Small-scale climbing walls, ladders, or monkey bars help develop strength and coordination.

2. Soft Landing Zones: Cushioned flooring or gym mats provide safety and comfort, especially beneath climbing or jumping areas.

3. Swinging or Hanging Elements: Install ropes, sensory swings, or ceiling hooks for dynamic movement opportunities.

4. Colorful, Engaging Decor: Bright colors and bold shapes engage younger kids, making the space visually stimulating and fun.

5. Smart Storage: Built-in bins and low shelving keep toys accessible and the space organized.

Style + Play Can Coexist

One common misconception is that kids' playrooms have to be chaotic or clashing with the home's style. Not so! With the right materials, color choices, and multifunctional furniture, a playroom can seamlessly blend into your home while providing a space for movement and imagination.

The Chestnut Hill Playroom Project

In this featured project, we designed an indoor playroom that keeps kids active, creative, and engaged year-round. The space blends bright, playful design elements with thoughtful zoning to encourage a wide range of activities- from climbing and bouncing to reading and role play.

This playroom shows that active spaces can be both beautiful and practical, designed to evolve with a growing family and enhance the overall value of the home.
